A House for Mr. Biswas is one of my favorite books. Poor Mr. B.: all he wants is to live with his nuclear family without interference from his horde of inlaws. Desperately funny much of the time, this is still a very sad and even tragic book. Naipaul's skill at character development and plot surprises V.S.
