PAUL HIEBERT was born on 17 July in Pilot Mound, Manitoba and grew up in Altona. A professor of chemistry at the University of Manitoba, Hiebert was best known for his novel Sarah Binks, which won a Stephen Leacock Award for Humour and was a Canada Reads selection in Sarah Binks. Paul Hiebert's Sarah Binks met with generally favourable reviews as a witty and sharp parody of both bad poetry, and academia. Reynold Siemens notes that 20 of 22 reviews were "enthusiastic in their commendation" (). Sarah Binks has become something of a cult hero in Saskatchewan, and it's easy to see why. Hiebert wrote this Canadian classic in the late '40s --it's a unique and very cleverly written -- ahem -- "biography" of the immensely talented it's pure fiction, quite hilarious, and all tongue in cheek.
Unfortunately, the technique wore thin too quickly, and by the midpoint my interest was /5. Sarah Binks teeters back and forth between silliness and satire. Hiebert satires rural Canada, critics, and politics to list but a few targets.
