Sarah Binks has become something of a cult hero in Saskatchewan, and it's easy to see why. Hiebert wrote this Canadian classic in the late '40s --it's a unique and very cleverly written -- ahem -- "biography" of the immensely talented it's pure fiction, quite hilarious, and all tongue in cheek.

Unfortunately, the technique wore thin too quickly, and by the midpoint my interest was /5. Sarah Binks teeters back and forth between silliness and satire. Hiebert satires rural Canada, critics, and politics to list but a few targets. While I don't partcularly agree with his thinly disguised views on small-town Canada (I think triviality is subjective to your reference point) and on the outsiders who try to evaluate its art (I DO 3/5(2).

Paul Hiebert’s critical biography of the wholly mythical but irrepressible and irresistible Sarah Binks, Sarah Binks book Sweet Songstress of Saskatchewan,” who gave her life to poetry and died a martyr to the muse, is a hilarious analysis of her career and influences, along with a memorable selection of the poet's tenderest, most inspiring writings.4/5(1).

Clearly Mutford and the customer who calls Sarah Binks a "feeling poetic genius" don't get this book, but for different reasons. Yes, as one customer correctly points out, Sarah Binks is a complete figment of Hiebert's imagination, but it goes further than that -- his critical persona is made up, in fact, everything in the book from start to finish is satire -- he's making fun of that element /5(3).
